In our previous installment, Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity Testing: Part 1, we explored the groundbreaking science behind cell-free DNA (cfDNA) and how modern technology allows us to determine paternity with 99.9% accuracy without any risk to the fetus. If you haven't read that yet, I strongly recommend starting there to understand the biological foundations of the test.
Now that you understand how the science works, this guide focuses on the practical side of the experience. Managing a pregnancy is already a journey filled with appointments, health milestones, and planning. When you add a prenatal paternity test into the mix, logistics and timing become critical. This post will walk you through the practical planning, pregnancy management, and the most frequently asked questions we receive at Brashan DNA Services.
When is the best time to schedule your NIPP test?
The most critical factor in a Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity (NIPP) test is the timing. While traditional paternity tests happen after birth, NIPP allows for answers much earlier. However, the biological clock of your pregnancy dictates when the test can be performed.
At Brashan DNA Services, we require the mother to be at least 9 weeks pregnant (measured from the first day of the last menstrual period) before the blood draw occurs. This is because the concentration of fetal DNA in the maternal bloodstream, known as the "fetal fraction", must be high enough to be isolated and analyzed.
- 9 Weeks: The earliest point for a standard NIPP test.
- 10 Weeks+: Recommended for those opting for our express testing kits to ensure a robust sample is present for faster processing.
If a test is performed too early (before 9 weeks), there is a high likelihood of an "inconclusive" result due to low fetal fraction, which would require a redraw and delay your answers. We advise using a pregnancy dating scan or consulting with your midwife to confirm your exact gestation before booking your appointment at our shop.

How to prepare for the collection process
The NIPP process is "non-invasive" for the baby, but it does require a standard venipuncture (blood draw) for the mother. Unlike home paternity tests that use only cheek swabs, the maternal sample must be handled with clinical precision.
1. Booking a Phlebotomist
Because the maternal sample is a blood draw, it cannot be done by the patient at home. You will need to arrange for a qualified phlebotomist or nurse to collect the sample. Many of our clients choose to visit one of our associated DNA testing clinics, or they arrange for a mobile phlebotomist to visit their home.
2. The Alleged Father’s Sample
The alleged father provides a simple mouth swab. This is non-invasive and can be done at the same time as the maternal blood draw or separately. If the alleged father is not available to attend the appointment, he can use one of our remote kits, provided the chain of custody remains intact for legal purposes.
3. Hydration is Key
For the mother, being well-hydrated is the most important preparation. Drinking plenty of water in the 24 hours leading up to the blood draw makes the veins easier to access and ensures a smoother collection process. There is no need to fast for an NIPP test; in fact, we recommend having a light meal beforehand to prevent lightheadedness.
Managing your pregnancy journey: Lifestyle and health factors
While the NIPP test is highly advanced, certain health factors and lifestyle choices can impact the testing process. Transparency with your testing coordinator is essential for an accurate result.
Does medication affect the test?
In most cases, routine pregnancy vitamins, antibiotics, or common medications do not interfere with the cfDNA analysis. However, if you are undergoing specific treatments like blood thinners or have recently had a blood transfusion, you must notify us.
What if I am having twins?
Currently, NIPP testing is not available for multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets, etc.). This is because the laboratory cannot distinguish which fetal DNA belongs to which twin in the maternal bloodstream. If you are carrying multiples, we recommend waiting until birth for a standard paternity test.
Can IVF pregnancies be tested?
Yes, but with caveats. If the pregnancy was achieved through IVF using the mother's own egg and the alleged father's sperm, NIPP is perfectly suitable. However, if an egg donor was used, the laboratory must be notified, as the genetic profile of the mother will not match the egg used for the pregnancy.

Practical planning: Handling the results
Once the samples reach our laboratory, the wait begins. We understand that this can be a stressful period, which is why we prioritize speed and transparency.
- Standard Results: Typically delivered within 5 to 7 working days.
- Express Results: Can be delivered in as little as 3 to 4 working days.
The results will be sent securely to your my-account portal or via a password-protected email. The report will provide a "Probability of Paternity." A result of 99.9% or higher indicates that the tested man is the biological father. A result of 0% indicates he is excluded as the father.
Managing the Emotional Aspect
Waiting for paternity results during pregnancy can be emotionally taxing. We encourage our clients to seek support through professional counseling or trusted confidants. Our role at Brashan DNA Services is to provide the clinical facts and "erase doubt," but we recognize the human element involved in every test.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
To help you manage your journey, we have compiled the most common questions from our frequently asked questions page specifically regarding prenatal testing.
Is the test truly safe for my baby?
Yes. Because we only take a blood sample from the mother's arm, there is zero risk of miscarriage or harm to the fetus. This is the primary advantage over "invasive" tests like amniocentesis or CVS (Chorionic Villus Sampling), which involve inserting a needle into the uterus.
What if the alleged father is a close relative of another potential father?
If the two potential fathers are close relatives (e.g., brothers or father and son), you must inform the laboratory. This requires a more intensive genetic analysis to distinguish between the two similar genetic profiles.
Can this test be used for immigration purposes?
Yes, we provide DNA testing for immigration. However, these tests must follow a strict "chain of custody," where an independent third party verifies the identity of all participants and oversees the sample collection.
Does the test reveal the gender of the baby?
While NIPP technology can identify fetal sex (by looking for the presence of the Y chromosome), our standard paternity test focuses strictly on the genetic markers needed for paternity. If you are interested in gender identification, please inquire with our team at the time of booking.
