The Science of Grandparent Testing: Can It Prove Paternity?

A grandparent dna test is the primary scientific alternative used to establish biological paternity when the alleged father is deceased, missing, or unwilling to participate. We compare the STR markers of the child against those of the grandparent. If the child and the grandparent share a significant number of these markers, it indicates a high probability of a biological relationship. This link effectively confirms that the grandparent’s son is the child's biological father.

Is the result as accurate as a paternity test?

While a direct paternity DNA test is the gold standard, a grandparent test is highly reliable. The accuracy depends on who participates:

  • Both paternal grandparents: Testing both grandparents alongside the child typically yields a probability of paternity greater than 99.9%.
  • One grandparent and the mother: Including the biological mother allows the lab to "subtract" her DNA contribution, isolating the paternal markers and significantly increasing result certainty.
  • One grandparent only: This can still provide a "supported" or "not supported" result, but there is a higher statistical risk of an inconclusive finding.

What samples are required for testing?

We utilize non-invasive buccal (cheek) swabs for all participants. Follow these steps for collection:

  1. Order the Grandparentage DNA Test Kit.
  2. Scrub the inside of the cheek for 30 seconds using the provided sterile swabs.
  3. Place the swabs into the secure envelopes provided.
  4. Complete the consent forms for all parties.
  5. Return the samples to our accredited UK laboratory via the pre-paid envelope.

How long does the process take?

Standard results are available within 3 to 5 working days of the samples reaching our laboratory. For urgent cases, we offer express service options.
