Grandparentage DNA test kit – when both relevant grandparents are available for testing
A grandparentage DNA test kit can be useful for establishing a relationship between a child and a parent, in situations where that parent cannot be tested. It can, for example, be used to establish the paternity of a child if both paternal grandparents can be tested, or to determine a maternal relationship when both maternal grandparents can provide samples.
In these types of tests, the inclusion of a sample from the child’s other parent is always recommended. For example, if demonstrating paternity by testing a child and the paternal grandparents, the child’s mother should also be included as this will increase the probability of obtaining a conclusive result. When the mother is not included in this testing, while the result may suggest a relationship, it will not confirm the true nature of the relationship. This is caused by the patterns of DNA inheritance and can therefore only calculate a most likely relationship from the available evidence.
Grandparentage DNA test kit – when only one grandparent is available for testing
You can establish the paternity of a child in the absence of the father so long as at least one of the paternal grandparents is available. While this test can indicate whether the child and the alleged father are related, it cannot provide a conclusive result. This is because of the patterns of DNA inheritance which mean it is not always possible to detect a relationship. It is advisable to include the child's mother in the test to improve the chances of getting a conclusive result.
In the absence of both parents, testing other paternal uncles and maternal aunties may also be used to increase the probability of getting a more definitive result.
